John Day lies at the heart of Grant County, a beautiful mountainous area of Eastern Oregon. Visitors to the area are treated to breathtaking views of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and have access to many different activities and points of interest.

Mountain Trails and Lakes
	Magone Lake - A pristine natural lake nestled in the tall Ponderosa Pines, 25 minute drive from John Day on paved roads. Picnic areas, a campground, a sandy beach area for swimming, and a foot trail around the lake make this lake a favorite of locals. A must see. Ask us for directions!
	Strawberry Mountain - A moderate hike from roads-end puts you at the edge of a sparkling wilderness lake. Hike further up the mountain to other lakes and waterfalls. Plan on spending several hours and enjoying this unspoiled forest treasure. Ask us for directions!
Fossil Beds and Painted Hills
	John Day Fossil Beds National Monument - A delight for anyone interested in fossils or prehistoric times. The visitor center (40 minutes from John Day) is incredible and all of the fossil bed units offer awesome views. http://www.nps.gov/joda/
Museums
	Kam Wah Chung Museum - This museum of Chinese history in Grant County is on the National Register of Historic Places. You'll never guess the treasures that lie on the inside! The museum is only 100' from Sonshine Bed and Breakfast. Kam Wah Chung Museum
	Grant County Historical Museum - Located in Canyon City, displaying historic exhibits from the early days of Canyon City and Grant County. Grant County Historical Museum
	Depot Park Museum - Located in Prairie City at the foot of Strawberry Mountain. Well worth the trip. Prairie City also has a wonderful downtown with well-preserved buildings from the late 1800’s, gift shops and an old-fashioned mercantile. Depot Park Museum
	Sumpter Valley Historic District - Located 45 minutes NE of John day, Sumpter offers loads of railroad and gold mining nostalgia. Sumpter Valley Sumpter Valley Railway
	Oxbow Trade Company 'Wagon Shop' - In an historic building on the south edge of Canyon City, you will find wall-to-wall buggies, wagons, sleighs, and other antiques in various stages of restoration. No admission fee. A MUST see!! Oxbow Trade Company Wagon Shop
